Argentina Home Style


“Barbecue” in the USA usually conjures up images of the 4th of July; all red, white and blue. In Argentina it takes on a whole new atmosphere that is found everywhere you go.

This “parrilla” style grill is in a private residence just outside Buenos Aires. The wood is heated to glowing embers in the small bin to the right. When they are ready they are spread out on the “floor” of the grill and with a crank the grate is lowered to within inches of the coals. Meat, chorizo, vegetables and potatoes are roasted to perfection. The bread is heated and you have an Argentinian feast!

(if anyone in the Richmond area knows where to get South American chorizo, please share!)

If you want to continue eating in the true spirit of the Argentine ranch. You would set a table made of an entire cross section of the mu tree (remove the bark) and a wrought iron base. The chairs would be a rugged brown leather.

Serve a tasty Malbec wine and serve your side dishes in a copper pot lined with stainless steel...you will need to properly beat the pot to show some rugged wear and tear--brand new just won’t do!
